What Is Exosome Therapy?

Exosome therapy is an emerging field that focuses on the use of exosomes for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Exosomes are small vesicles released by cells, including MSC (mesenchymal stem cells), which can carry proteins, RNA, and other molecules. Due to their unique properties, they play a crucial role in cellular communication and have potential applications in treating various inflammatory and aging conditions, diseases, and injury.

Modern Aesthetics utilizes exosomes from Kimera® Labs. When combined with microneedling and aesthetic laser procedures under Dr. Shahzad Anwar's guidance, exosome therapy can enhance the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, skin texture, and pigmentation issues. Exosome therapy that does not include platelet-rich plasma (PRP) eliminates the need for a blood draw and offers improved treatment outcomes with faster recovery times. Free from paragons and hypoallergenic, exosomes are equally effective regardless of a patient's age or health issues. When used alongside PRP, Kimera exosomes can amplify the effects of PRP, enhancing and providing a support structure that broadens the coverage and extends the duration of the treatment area. Call Modern Aesthetics today to learn more about how exosome therapy may help you achieve the skin health you deserve.

What Happens During Exosome Therapy?

Exosome therapy utilizes regenerative products for microneedling, tri-fractional, and C02 laser treatments. Exosomes penetrate the skin to deliver a potent blend of growth factors, peptides, co-enzymes, minerals, amino acids, vitamins, and anti-inflammatory agents, effectively rejuvenating and deeply moisturizing the skin. They carry proteins like growth factors, enzymes, receptors, transcription factors, and matrix proteins that control how cells are structured, function, and communicate. Exosome therapy works by utilizing the natural properties of exosomes to deliver therapeutic molecules to target cells. These exosomes can cross barriers like the blood-brain barrier, making them ideal for treating hard-to-reach areas. Exosomes carry proteins and include messenger RNA (mRNA), which is the blueprint for creating proteins, and micro RNA (miRNA), which is crucial for signaling inside cells. They have the same type of membrane as the cells they originate from, which helps protect these contents from being broken down until they reach their target cell. This protection allows exosomes to contribute to the development of tissues like skin, hair, bones, muscle, and cartilage. Administered by using targeted therapy at our Roseville and Walnut Creek, CA practice, exosome therapy is based on the principle of enhancing cellular communication for curative benefits.

Where Are MSCs Found?

Gathering MSCs is a very complicated process with several steps to ensure their safety and effectiveness. Modern Aesthetics employs exosome therapy with supplies from Kimera Labs. Kimera's exosomes are derived from a single donor, healthy term birth, and placental source and are designed to optimize a rich source of proteins, growth factors, and RNA to maximize tissue repair, healing, and regeneration. MSCs from Kimera Labs undergo four distinct processes before they can be used for exosome therapy:

  1. Screening: Much like the screening process at a tissue bank, MSC donors will be screened for HIV, HTLV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, and CMV. However, as an added precaution, Kimera Labs also tests for Zika, EBV, Hepatitis E, HHV6, HHV7, HHV8, HSV1, HTLV1, HTLV2, BKV, and Norovirus.
  2. Isolation: While many labs use fetal bovine serum or human serum to easily culture cells, Kimera Labs exclusively uses xeno-free chemically defined medium to further reduce the risk of contamination during the isolation process. Once the MSCs release exosomes into the culture media, they will be sterile-filtered to remove any cells. After which point, the exosomes will go through a proprietary, serial purification process to create MSC exosomes in scalable quantities.
  3. Characterization: Nano Tracking Analysis (NTA) is often used to give labs necessary information, such as discrete particle quantification and size distribution. However, in some cases, NTA can provide incorrect numbers. Due to this chance, Kimera Labs makes use of additional exosome detection modalities, such as dSTORM microscopy, to confirm the nature and number of exosomes in a given sample.
  4. Identification: In addition to the use of protein analysis flow cytometry, RNA sequencing, and Nano Tracking Analysis, Kimera Labs also utilizes advanced imaging modalities to precisely define the character of its exosome products. Once the exosomes have been verified for quality and consistency, they will be sent to our offices in Roseville and Walnut Creek, CA for use.
