What is TCA Cross?
TCA Cross is a minimally invasive procedure performed at Modern Aesthetics in Roseville, Walnut Creek, and Yuba City, CA that uses a high concentration of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) to create a chemical reaction in ice pick scars (scars that have a sunken or pitted look). This process stimulates the production of new collagen, which helps to fill in the indentations and improve the appearance of the scars. The cross in TCA Cross stands for “chemical reconstruction of skin scars” and is most commonly used to treat acne scars, although not every ice pick scar that TCA Cross can treat is a result of acne. If you have one or more deep scars affecting your self-esteem, contact Dr. Shahzad Anwar and the team at Modern Aesthetics for a consultation.
How is TCA Cross Performed?
TCA Cross sessions are performed at our Roseville, Walnut Creek, and Yuba City, CA offices. After a consultation, Dr. Anwar and the team will determine the concentration of TCA that should be applied to the scar based on the depth and extent of the scarring. The acid is placed inside the scar(s) using a small applicator that will not harm the surrounding skin. The area treated by TCA will exhibit a process called “frosting,” where it turns white and then red. This is normal and is a sign that the damaged skin will scab and heal, creating healthier skin. The treatment takes approximately 15 – 30 minutes at Modern Aesthetics, depending on the number of scars you have treated. Multiple treatments are often needed, and Dr. Anwar will provide detailed aftercare instructions so your results are not compromised.
Modern Aesthetics Reviews
He is the kindest, most knowledgeable Dr. I have ever been to! He is helpful in so many ways!
I had an amazing experience at Modern Aesthetics. Dr. Anwar is incredibly knowledgeable and really takes the time to listen and tailor everything to your needs. I came in with concerns about texture and visible pores, and he recommended a personalized skincare regimen plus microneedling. The combination has truly transformed my skin. My skin is a lot brighter and smoother now, and my pores look so much smaller. Dr. Anwar made the whole process easy and comfortable, and you can tell he genuinely cares about his patients. I’m so grateful for the results and highly recommend Modern Aesthetics!
Amazing service. Highly recommended
Dr. Anwar is amazing. I even traveled over an hour to visit him every few months prior to him expanding his locations over the years. He's highly knowledgeable, experienced, honest, gives great advice when unsure, and not only provides the best results but also the most affordable. I promise you. Definitely make your appointment, men and ladies.5 plus stars
Very impressed! The interior was well designed clean. The staff was very friendly especially 2 lovely ladies working that day Autumn and Elana! I came in to get some Botox done and the doctor was very helpful! He advised me how many units was necessary based on my medical situation rather than trying to sell me something I didn’t need. He pointed out the flaws in my face without making me feel insecure.

TCA Cross FAQs
Can TCA Cross treatment be combined with other skin treatments?
TCA Cross can be effectively combined with other skin rejuvenation treatments, such as laser therapy or chemical peels, to enhance overall results. It's important to discuss the best combination strategy with a skincare professional, as timing and skin sensitivity must be carefully managed to avoid excessive irritation or damage to the skin.
How many TCA Cross treatments are typically needed to see visible improvement?
The number of treatments required can vary depending on the skin's condition and the depth of the scars being treated. Generally, patients might need multiple sessions spaced several weeks apart to achieve optimal results. Progress should be monitored by one of our skin care professionals, who can adjust the treatment plan as necessary.
What are the visible signs that TCA Cross treatment is healing properly?
Proper healing from TCA Cross treatment typically involves a gradual improvement in the appearance of treated areas. Initially, the skin may appear red and swollen, but this should diminish over a few days. Over time, the scarred areas should begin to blend more seamlessly with the surrounding skin texture and tone, indicating effective healing.
