Don't Skip Laser Hair Removal This Summer—Here's Why

Summer is one of the busiest times of year for laser hair removal, and for good reason. Swimsuits, vacations, and more time outdoors make many people want smooth, low-maintenance skin. But one of the most common questions we hear is:

"Can I still get laser hair removal during the summer?"

The answer is yes—you absolutely can. You just need to take a few extra precautions to protect your skin and get the best possible results.

The Biggest Concern: Sun Exposure

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in your hair follicles. When your skin has a fresh tan, there's more pigment in the surrounding skin, making it more sensitive during treatment and increasing the risk of irritation or discoloration.

That doesn't mean summer treatments are off-limits—it simply means protecting your skin becomes even more important.

How to Safely Get Laser Hair Removal During the Summer

Avoid Tanning Before and After Treatment

Try to avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after your appointment. This includes natural tanning and tanning beds.

If you'll be outside, wear protective clothing whenever possible.

Wear Sunscreen Every Day

Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher to any treated areas that may be exposed to the sun. Reapply throughout the day, especially if you're swimming or spending extended time outdoors.

Shave—Don't Wax

You should shave the treatment area about 24 hours before your appointment.

Avoid:

  • Waxing
  • Tweezing
  • Threading
  • Epilating

These methods remove the hair follicle that the laser needs to target.

Skip Hot Activities for 24-48 Hours

After treatment, your skin may be slightly pink or sensitive.

For the first day or two, avoid:

  • Hot tubs
  • Saunas
  • Steam rooms
  • Intense workouts
  • Hot showers

This helps minimize irritation while your skin heals.

What If You Have a Tan?

If you've recently tanned or gotten sunburned, let your provider know before your appointment.

In some cases, it's safest to postpone treatment until your tan fades. This helps ensure your treatment is both safe and effective.

Is Summer Actually a Good Time to Start?

Absolutely.

Laser hair removal requires multiple treatments spaced several weeks apart because hair grows in cycles. Starting during the summer means you'll already have several sessions completed by fall and winter—and be much closer to long-term hair reduction by next summer.

Waiting until winter isn't necessary if you're willing to follow proper aftercare.

Common Summer Questions

Can I go to the beach after laser hair removal?

Yes, but it's best to avoid direct sun exposure for the first 24-48 hours and always wear SPF on treated areas.

Can I swim after treatment?

Swimming is generally fine after the initial skin sensitivity has resolved, but avoid hot pools, hot tubs, and prolonged sun exposure immediately after your appointment.

Can I still go on vacation?

Yes! Simply plan your appointments around your travel schedule and be diligent about sunscreen and sun protection.

Enjoy Smooth Skin All Year Long

Summer doesn't have to put your laser hair removal journey on hold. With proper sun protection and expert guidance, laser hair removal can be performed safely throughout the year.

Whether you're preparing for a beach vacation or simply tired of shaving every few days, summer is still a great time to begin your treatments.
